Commodifier API tool

Intro

The Commodifier API Tool is a lightweight web application designed for Rovjok Oy to automate the classification of warehouse inventory descriptions into standardized UNSPSC commodity codes. The product bridges a technically advanced text similarity based backend with a simple, human centered interface that supports both operational use and API validation. My responsibility covered UX research, interaction design, UI design, responsive behavior, and supporting visual assets.

The primary design objective was to transform a complex, error prone classification workflow into a fast, trustworthy, and easily interpretable user experience.

Challenges

The primary challenge was designing an interface for a highly specialized domain that most users are not experts in. UNSPSC codes are hierarchical, numeric, and abstract, which makes validation and trust difficult without clear contextual cues.

Another challenge was balancing an API first system with direct human use. The UI needed to expose structured, machine readable outputs in a way that remained legible, scannable, and understandable to non technical users.

Performance perception was also critical. Because the tool replaces manual work, any ambiguity around system state, loading, or result confidence could reduce trust in automation.

Finally, the interface needed to scale across desktop and mobile devices while maintaining clarity in data dense outputs.

Solution

A minimal input driven interaction model was implemented, centered around a single primary text input for item descriptions. This reduced friction, guided correct usage, and minimized cognitive overhead.

Classification results are presented in a structured, table based layout that mirrors downstream data consumption formats. Each returned attribute, including commodity name, UNSPSC code, internal ID, brand, description, and similarity score, is clearly labeled and grouped to support rapid scanning.

Visual hierarchy was carefully applied to distinguish primary decision making data from secondary metadata. The similarity score was intentionally surfaced to provide transparency and confidence in automated classification results.

Clear loading and processing states communicate system responsiveness and eliminate uncertainty. The UI responds immediately to user actions, reinforcing reliability.

Responsive layouts ensure consistent usability across devices. On smaller screens, outputs reflow into stacked groupings while preserving information hierarchy and readability.

The visual design aligns with Rovjok Oy’s brand through restrained color usage, clean typography, and subtle illustrative elements that reinforce the concept of structured inventory.

Impacts

The Commodifier API Tool significantly reduced manual classification time, transforming a slow, labor intensive task into a near instant process. Automation improved consistency and accuracy across UNSPSC assignments, directly increasing data quality.

Similarity scoring and transparent outputs increased user trust and reduced the need for secondary verification. Standardized results improved internal reporting, external data exchange, and overall system reliability.

The tool also serves as a scalable interface layer for the API, supporting testing, demonstrations, and onboarding while maintaining a clear separation between backend logic and user experience.
